How to Get More Kief Out of Your Grinder

Posted by Smoke Cartel on

Do you love kief? Can't get enough of it? Need it? Crave it?

If you have pretty much any standard grinder, you've collected kief before. If you didn't know it was there the whole time, check the bottom compartment.

If you did already know it was there, and want to try to get more, here are some tips to satisfy the itch.

1. Don’t grind too much at once

You might think the more herb you grind, the more kief you'll get. That is exactly wrong.

Grinding too much at once causes the grinder to get all sticky-icky real soon and the kief will not get properly sifted. Basically, putting too much material in the grinder all at once will cause you to have less kief in the end - not more. Moderation is key.

It’s better to grind a smaller amount multiple times. A quality grinder with a sifting screen will collect plenty of kief, won’t get dirty quickly, and might even last you a lifetime. Taking note of the amount you grind is taking care of your grinder.

2. Put your grinder in the freezer

Freezing your grinder has multiple benefits. It makes it easier to clean and it allows you to easily scrape off valuable kief and resin that’s surely filled every nook and cranny. This works for a lot of tools, not just grinders by the way. Two hours is a good mark if you’re impatient. Otherwise leave it overnight and reap the benefits next morning. Once you’re done scraping that goodness you’ll end up with a grinder that’s shinier than ever. On the same note…

3. Clean your grinder regularly

This is always an idea when we splash out cash for a brand new grinder. And then further down the road we end up with a yucky piece of metal that doesn’t grind as it used to, all filled with resin and smelling like bong water. Don’t let that happen to you - a grinder is a stoner’s best friend. Use the freezing method to make the job easier, scrape that valuable kief off and then soak it or rub it with alcohol. We have an extensive guide on how to clean your smoking equipment. It will pay you back tenfold and collect as much kief as it did when it was brand new!

4. Make sure your herb is dry

Properly dried and cured herbs will yield the most kief. If your herbs are too fresh, the kief will not naturally fall off of them. Grinding them will yield some kief, of course but there is also a pro-tip we’ll share with you. Place your fresh herbs in a freezer for about 15 minutes. This won’t affect their potency but it will slightly change the flavor profile. Freezing the nugs will, believe it or not, dry them out a bit. Just make sure you don’t forget about them and leave them in the freezer for too long. Grinding them after they’ve been set in a freezer for such a short window will allow you to maximize kief collection. Who would’ve thought?

5. Get a Scraper

Sometimes, it's not that you have to grind more. It's that you've been missing a bunch that's already there.

Getting kief out of a grinder is a pain in the rump, especially if you're relying on just your stumpy wittle fingers. That's where a scraping tool can really come in handy.

Any old ding dong scraper isn't gonna cut it. If you want to sufficiently increase your yield so that investing in a new tool was worth it, you need something that really hugs the edges. A metal tool like the Keefer Mini Scraper is perfect-- in fact, it might even be overqualified.

So precise, so fine, and so sharp, you could probably take out somebody's spleen with it. Since this would be illegal, using it for kief collection is the next best thing.

Final Advice

Kief is valuable. Storing and collecting it allows you to get the most out of your weed. All that hard-earned cash you spend on herbs will be that much sweeter when you learn to collect and utilize kief to turn into goodness such as hash. Veterans have made a science out of it - and for good reason.
