What Is Kief and Why Should You Collect It?

Kief is the fine, crystal-like powder that collects in the bottom chamber of a 4-piece grinder. It consists mainly of separated trichome heads, the tiny resin glands found on dried flower that produce and store the plant's aromatic compounds and resin. Because it contains very little plant material, kief is much more concentrated than ground flower.

According to Leafwell, dried flower typically contains up to 30% resin-rich compounds, while kief can range from 50% to 80% trichome-rich resin. Research published in Horticulture Research (Xie et al., 2023) identifies capitate-stalked trichomes as the plant's primary resin-producing structures, which is why high-quality kief consists mostly of intact trichome heads rather than leaf or stem material.

Unlike ground flower, which includes the full plant material, kief passes through a herb grinder's mesh screen while heavier fibers remain behind. The result is a fine, resin-rich powder that's significantly more concentrated by weight than the flower it came from.

Which Grinder Type Collects Kief?

Only a 4-piece grinder with a fine mesh screen and dedicated kief catcher collects kief as you grind. 2-piece and 3-piece grinders lack the screen needed to separate trichome heads, so the fine resin stays mixed with the ground flower.

The mesh screen determines how much kief reaches the catcher. A 100–150 micron screen collects cleaner, more resin-rich kief with fewer plant particles, while coarser screens collect more material but with lower purity. For most users, 100–150 microns offers the best balance of purity and collection speed.

Freeze Your Grinder

Freeze your grinder for 20–30 minutes before use. Cold temperatures make trichome heads more brittle, allowing them to separate more easily instead of sticking to the grinder or screen. Freezing the flower at the same time can improve results.

US Patent 11,000,856 on trichome separation found that temperatures below 0°C increase trichome yield during mechanical agitation, with optimal separation between 0°C and -20°C.

Use the Coin Method

After grinding, place a clean small coin in the collection chamber above the screen and shake the grinder for 30–60 seconds. The coin helps knock loose trichomes stuck to the chamber walls and mesh. When it's combined with freezing, this method can produce 50–100% more kief than standard grinding.

Don't Over-Grind

Grind only until the flower reaches a uniform consistency. Over-grinding creates fine plant particles that pass through the screen, reducing kief purity. High-quality kief should appear golden to light brown rather than green. Because green-tinted kief contains more plant material, reducing its overall purity.

Start With Properly Dried Flower

Dry flower separates more easily than damp material. If it feels sticky or clumps together, fewer trichome heads will pass through the screen. Flower cured to 10–12% moisture can leave trichomes sticky enough to cling to the grinder instead of falling into the catcher.

Use the Right Cleaning Tool

How to Store and Use Your Kief

Top a Bowl or Sprinkle Into a Roll

Note: 160–180°F temp range produces the best results, while above 200°F can reduce aromatic compounds.
