There's a lot of gadgets and gizmos in the smoking world, and it can be difficult to navigate your way through them if you don't know all the lingo. Whether you're just starting out, or you never learned what the words mean and now it's too late to ask, this glossary will help you climb the ladder of your successful stoner career.

Adapter: A piece used to change the size, sex, and angle of the joint on a water pipe or bong.

All Day Vape (ADV): Term used to describe an e-liquid that’s so enjoyable you could vape it all day long.

Ash catcher: An attachment for a water pipe or bong that traps and catches ash & debris so that it doesn’t end up in your pipe or reach your mouth through the mouthpiece. Some ash catchers are designed to diffuse & cool smoke for a more pleasant smoking experience.

Atomizer: A technical term for a heater coil that warms e-liquid and turns it into the vapor you inhale.

Banger: A small dish that attaches to the joint of a dab rig that can be heated to high temperatures and used to vaporize concentrates.

Banger nail: A part of a dab rig that’s also called a dab nail. A banger nail inserts into the water pipe so it can be heated with a torch. When heated, the nail will turn the substance you placed on it to vapor, which you can inhale.

Blunt: A cigar that’s been emptied, hollowed out, and filled with marijuana.

Bong: A device used for smoking cannabis or other herbal substances. A bong uses water to cool down the inhaled smoke. They come in all kinds of sizes, shapes, and styles.

Borosilicate glass: Also called ‘boro’ glass, borosilicate glass contains boric oxide. This glass is strong, durable, and can stand up to high temperatures.

Bowl: A part on a pipe or bong designed to hold cannabis, tobacco, or other dry herb substances. Once loaded, the contents of the bowl are lit and inhaled.

Bud: A term used to describe the flower of the marijuana plant.

Budtender: An attendant working behind the counter at a dispensary or retail cannabis shop.

Bubbler: A pipe that’s similar to a bong in that they both hold water. A bubbler is kind of like a cross between a traditional glass pipe and a water pipe. It uses water and a percolator to filter smoke so the user gets smooth and flavorful hits.

Cannabinoids: Chemical compounds found in cannabis that act upon the body’s cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoids produce various effects including pain relief and psychoactive effects.

Cannabis: A term used to describe the plant Cannabis sativa. Cannabis is also commonly called marijuana, weed, bud, and pot.

Cannabis concentrates: Various forms of concentrates obtained from cannabis plants through an extraction process. These concentrates contain very high levels of cannabinoids like THC. Cannabis concentrates are often referred to as hash, shatter, wax, or crumble. Their appearance is as diverse as their names. These concentrates can be thick like butter or as hard as bricks. They can also be oils that vary in color and waxy residues.

Cannabis wax: A cannabis concentrate made of oils extracted from the cannabis plant. It’s an extremely potent concentrate containing high levels of THC.

Carb: A hole on the side of a hand pipe that’s used for the regulation of airflow.

Carb cap: A cap used on an open-air dab rig. It works like a lid on a boiling pot by containing the heat in the nail and restricting airflow. Carb caps come in many shapes and sizes and are ideal to use when dabbing at low temperatures.

CBD: Abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of many cannabinoids found in cannabis. CBD is highly regarded for its medicinal benefits when treating pain, inflammation, and anxiety without the psychoactive ‘high’ effect associated with THC.

Chillum: A straight conical pipe with an end-to-end channel. A chillum doesn’t have a carb hole so there’s less airflow control in the pipe. Chillums are commonly made of glass, clay, or ceramic.

Dab: A slang term used to refer to a dose of cannabis concentrate that is ‘dabbed’ onto a hot surface and inhaled.

Dab pen: A pocket-friendly, electronic pen-shaped vaporizer. A dab pen is used to vape dabs and waxes for easy consumption.

Dab rig: A specific type of pipe or bong used to smoke concentrates and oils. They’re typically made of glass with nails made of quartz or titanium.

Dabber: A small tool used for scooping up concentrates to place on a heated nail.

Dabbing: A method of pressing extract, concentrate, or oil against a heated surface like the nail of an oil rig and then inhaling the smoke. Dabbing is also a term used to describe the process of taking hits of concentrates using water pipes or bongs.

Dug-out: A portable & discreet hand-held box with two chambers. The larger chamber is designed to hold dry herb and the second smaller chamber holds a spring-loaded one-hitter. The one-hitter is pressed into the dry herb for collecting the herb and taking a quick smoke.

E-cig: Also known as an electronic cigarette and e-vaporizer, an e-cigs is a battery-operated vaping device that looks like a cigarette. An e-cig has a heating coil that heats up the e-liquid inside the device until it turns into vapor for inhalation. Most e-cigs use tanks to hold e-liquid rather than cartridges.

E-liquid: Flavored liquid used inside e-cigs for vaping. E-liquid is often called vape juice and it’s generally made up of water, nicotine, flavoring, and a propylene glycol base.

Edibles: Food products you can eat that are infused with cannabis extracts. Edibles come in many forms like candies, cookies, brownies, butters, oils, and flavored coffee drinks. When consuming edibles, the euphoric high is not felt right away because it takes the body longer to absorb and digest the cannabis-infused product.

E-nail: An electronic device consisting of a controller box that delivers heat through a coil that connects directly to the nail of a rig. An e-nail does away with the need for a blow-torch. It provides the user with the ability to precisely regulate heat for consistent dabbing results.

Hash: A term used for hashish which is a derivative extracted from cannabis plants.

Kief: A common THC concentrate in powder form that’s a green-goldish-color. Kief is also known as ‘sift’ because it can be processed & sifted in a three-chamber herb grinder. Once processed & sifted, kief is collected and smoked or consumed in edibles.

Marijuana: A general term for female cannabis plants or their dried flowers.

Nectar collector: A small glass tube used to smoke oil concentrates and waxes. Using a nectar collector is similar to drinking with a straw. You inhale the smoke through the mouthpiece at the end of the device while the other heated end is pressing up against your oil concentrate or wax.

Oil rig: Unlike a water pipe that’s used primarily for smoking dry herbs and flowers, a oil rig or a dab rig as it’s also called, is a type of water pipe made for smoking oils and concentrates. An oil rig has a quartz, titanium, or glass nail that’s heated with a hand-held torch. When a small amount of oil or concentrate is placed on the hot nail, a vapor is produced and then inhaled.

Pot: A slang term for marijuana.

Quartz banger: A term used to describe a dab nail made from quartz crystal. When a quartz banger nail is used, the user tastes nothing but the concentrate’s full-bodied flavor.

Sesh: A term used to describe a smoking session.

Shatter: A glass-like concentrate with up to 80% purity. Shatter will easily break into pieces if not handled carefully. Since it’s solid, you only have to break off a little piece of shatter and place it in an atomizer or heating chamber of your vaping pen to enjoy its effects.

THC: Abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the most well-known and abundantly available cannabinoid found in marijuana plants. THC is the component in pot that produces psychoactive effects like the euphoric feeling of being ‘high’ or ‘stoned’.

Vape MOD: A beefier and more powerful version of a vape pen. A MOD is also commonly called a MOD Box and it produces more vapor than a vape pen.

Vaporizer: A device used to consume a dry herb or concentrate. A vaporizer heats up the substance you load it with until the substance becomes a vapor that can be inhaled.

Vaping pen: A small pen-like vaporizer used for smoking concentrates.

Weed: Slang term for marijuana.
